A Virgin Voyage Cruise
There’s something about sailing through the Caribbean that instantly shifts you into vacation mode—but doing it with Virgin Voyages takes that feeling to an entirely different level.
Jeff and I recently set sail with another couple on a weeklong adventure through some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, departing from vibrant San Juan. From the moment we stepped onboard, we knew this wasn’t your typical cruise—no buffets, no stuffy dress codes, just an elevated, boutique hotel vibe at sea that we absolutely loved.
Setting Sail from San Juan
We spent a little time exploring Old San Juan before departure—colorful streets, historic forts, and just enough mojitos to officially kick off vacation mode. Sailing out of San Juan feels more relaxed and immersive than the typical cruise departure.
Tortola, BVI – Our Favorite Day on the Water
Our stop in Road Town ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip. Instead of a traditional excursion, we chartered a boat with a small group of fellow cruisers—and it was the best decision.
We spent the day cruising through the British Virgin Islands, hopping from one stunning spot to the next, with that perfect mix of music, sunshine, and salty air. The standout stop? Soggy Dollar Bar—a bucket-list beach bar where you quite literally swim ashore to grab a Painkiller. It’s exactly as fun (and as beautiful) as it sounds.
That day felt effortless and adventurous at the same time—no schedules, no crowds, just pure Caribbean magic.
St. Lucia – Spontaneous, Unfiltered, and So Fun
Castries gave us one of the most unexpected—and memorable—experiences of the trip. Instead of booking anything in advance, we ended up connecting with a local who offered to take us out on his (very small) boat.
What followed was an impromptu tour along the coastline—no script, no schedule, just a genuine, up-close look at the island from the water. It felt personal, a little adventurous, and completely different from a typical excursion.
We stopped for lunch at JJ's Mangrove Dockside, a laid-back waterfront spot that perfectly matched the vibe of the day. Great food, strong drinks, and a setting that made it very easy to lose track of time.
We’ll just say… we may have overindulged a bit—but somehow made it back to the ship and carried that energy right into the night. No regrets.
Martinique – Lush Gardens & a Leap of Faith
In Fort-de-France, we decided to lean into exploration—and it paid off in the best way.
We started the day at the stunning Jardin de Balata, which completely exceeded expectations. Think vibrant tropical flowers, lush greenery everywhere you look, and those picture-perfect suspended walkways through the treetops. It felt peaceful, immersive, and honestly a bit magical.
From there, we did what we do best—some very determined Googling—and stumbled upon Miza. No menu, no overthinking—just choose two, three, or four courses and trust the process.
Admittedly, it felt a little adventurous going in… but it turned out to be one of the best meals of the trip. Every dish was thoughtful, beautifully prepared, and full of flavor. One of those dining experiences where you’re not quite sure what’s coming next—but everything that arrives is better than expected.
St. Kitts – Easy, Unexpected, and Exactly What We Needed
Our stop in Basseterre ended up being refreshingly low-key—in the best way.
What started as a simple taxi ride turned into a short, scenic island tour… completely unasked for, but genuinely appreciated. Our driver proudly pointed out local highlights along the way, giving us a quick, personal glimpse into the island before dropping us off at a beach club.
And honestly, that ended up being exactly what we needed. A relaxed afternoon by the water, no agenda, no rushing—just time to unwind and enjoy where we were. It felt like a reset button in the middle of a busy itinerary.
The Reality Check: Too Much of a Good Thing
Here’s the honest takeaway—this itinerary was beautiful, but it was also a lot.
With a new port almost every day, we found ourselves constantly “on”—planning excursions, getting on and off the ship, trying to see it all. By midweek, we realized we were more tired than relaxed. It felt a bit like we were checking boxes instead of fully enjoying each destination.
And that’s when we had our aha moment: we’re sea day people.
Why Sea Days Matter (For Us)
One of the things Virgin Voyages does exceptionally well is the onboard experience—and we didn’t give ourselves enough time to fully enjoy it.
The best moments of the trip were actually the slower ones:
Coffee and ocean views in the morning
Lingering lunches with no schedule
Poolside afternoons that turned into sunset cocktails
Long, relaxed dinners without rushing off the ship
We realized that we travel to unwind—and a port-heavy itinerary, while incredible, didn’t quite give us that balance.
Back to San Juan (With a New Travel Perspective)
Sailing back into San Juan, we were already talking about our next trip—but with a different approach.
Fewer stops. More sea days. More time to actually be on vacation.
Final Thoughts
This was still an incredible trip—beautiful islands, great company, and an onboard experience we genuinely loved. But it also taught us something valuable about how we like to travel.
If you’re someone who loves exploring as much as possible, this itinerary is amazing. But if you’re like us and crave a slower pace, don’t underestimate the value of those sea days.
Sometimes the best part of the journey… is not going anywhere at all. 🌊
